The Ecofish Courtenay Whalers travelled to Parksville for their first game of the season on Friday September 28th. Joining the team behind the bench for his second year, Coach Garry Kremsater also made his presence known at the opening party. Kremsater had a few things to say about the first two periods, emphasizing forechecking, a need to keep skating, shooting and “bury the blooming puck” ! It enventually sunk in for most players as they were able to produce a much better third period to the coach’s delight.
The first and second period were somewhat entertaining with some bumping, roughing, missed open net opportunities and a variety of “interesting” and somewhat creative plays. Despite a slow start, the Whalers were able to get on the board in each period.
Haley Fraser scored her first of two in period one, having a great offensive impact throughout the game. Josee Bureau scored in the 2nd period on a redirect shot from Fraser. Words of wisdom: “Much can happen if you keep your stick on the ice” – Robyn Risk
Fraser scored her second in the third period with a blast from the point. Credit to rookie Donna Cloutier who made sure the goalie had very little sight of the puck. Roberta Churchill had a strong showing, both physically and tactically, leaving the coach speechless on many occasions by showing off an assortment of on ice thrusts! Birthday girl Jamie Banham had a celebration dance with her well deserved shut out.
Whalers welcome the addition of Jess Sekulich and Tammy Rodgers on their full time roster.
The game ended with the score of 3-0, an usual final result against Parksville who have been a power house for a number of years. Off to a great start!
