Despite the loss in the gold medal game during the CFB Comox tourney last weekend, it could be said that the Whalers have been continually improving their game and pretty much been on a roll. Moving into the final with a record of 3 wins in as many games, the team displayed some exciting and entertaining hockey for most of the weekend. Both Nancy Shields and Jaime Banham shared the shut outs. Too much celebration by the Whalers on the eve of the final may have been partly responsible for the under par performance Sunday morning but sometimes, team building is more important in the long run. Captain Allison Abraham took away MVP of the final game while Tamara Berger (Avril Homes) was voted fans’ favourite with her never ending display of craftsmanship around the opposition’s net, scoring multiple goals each game.
Nevertheless, the Whalers bounced back for the painful loss the following weekend with two commanding wins against Nanaimo and Parksville. Berger collected a couple of hat tricks and Sky Zimmerman (Brian McLean) succeeded herself in obtaining her first hat trick. Sky Niskasari (Canadian Western Bank) and Denise Davidson had outstanding games on defense, preventing the opposition any scoring opportunities.
The Whalers will be in action this Saturday playing their favorite cross town rivals in the Breakers. Puck drop at 9:15pm at the Glacier Garden arena.
The team would like to thank Ecofish Research and Brian McLean for their constant support as well as their coach Gary Kremsater for his dedication and passion!
