On Sunday, the Courtenay Whalers headed to Port Alberni for their second game of the season. With a mix of red shirts and full timers the Whalers were still feeling pretty good after their first win and they were hungry for another victory!
After the warm up, the Whalers noticed that the other team were a bit on the younger side of the age spectrum. There were a few weary looks over to the opponents bench but the Whalers were still determined to play hard and show them that age is merely a number!
The first period was impressive. The Whalers were on fire against the tornado that was Port Alberni. Jamie Banham was nothing short of a brick wall in net. To the Whalers, the period felt like a full 60 minutes had already past. Age is just a number, right??
The second period proved to be a bit more challenging with the Whaler’s flame dying down a little against the relentless tornado of Port Alberni’s young players. After a barrage of at least one hundred shots, Banham started to show her human side when a few pucks started to break down the brick wall. The period ended with Port Alberni leading 4-0.
Going into the third period, the Whalers were a bit discouraged but they were not about to quit. They were going to leave it all on the ice. After a couple last heroic attempts, the fire that had burned within them in the beginning had no fuel left. The tornados had sucked all the oxygen in its path of destruction. With nothing left to fuel the fire, the Whalers left their poor goalie to fend for herself. After another one hundred and fifty shots, Banham’s wall had crumbled giving the Port Alberni a 7-0 win over the Whalers.
Beaten but not disheartened, the Whalers left knowing what they needed to work on for future games. If you can’t out skate them, you have to outsmart them. As the saying goes: older and WISER!
