About us

   The Team

The Courtenay Whalers welcome players aged 18 and older. We are proud to be an inclusive and accessible team for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, races, cultures and religions.

The Courtenay Whalers are a fun, supportive crew who love hockey, and hanging out off the ice too. From lake days and summer BBQs to tournaments and our sparkly holiday skate, the Glitter Bowl, we know how to have a good time together.

We’re all about building friendships, cheering each other on, and making space for everyone to enjoy the game.

   Ice information

We skate out of the Sports Centre in Courtenay and aim to hit the ice at least once a week.

   Games

The Whalers love a good game—whether we’re hosting on home ice in Courtenay or hitting the road for matchups in Nanaimo, Campbell River, Port Alberni, and Fuller Lake. Throughout the season, we mix it up with a variety of fun and competitive games.

We also team up with the Comox Breakers for what we call “scrambles”—refereed games where we mix rosters and just play for the love of the game. And when we’re not on the road, we keep things lively with intersquad games that bring out our team spirit and friendly competition.

   Tournaments

Whalers on tour: hockey, hijinks and hotel snacks.

Every season, the Courtenay Whalers hit the road for some of the most fun and memorable weekends of the year—tournaments! In this past season, we laced up in Nanaimo, Campbell River, Powell River, and Whistler. These events are a great mix of hockey, team bonding, and good times on and off the ice.

In previous years, we’ve also taken our game to Victoria, and Port Hardy, and we’re always on the lookout for new places to play and connect with other teams.

Whether it’s a road trip or a ferry ride away, tournaments are a big part of what makes being a Whaler so much fun.

   Volunteer-Driven team

Our team is entirely volunteer-run, with dedicated individuals managing everything from organizing and coaching to scheduling and all the details in between.

Code of Conduct

Safe Play

All players will commit to playing safely and responsibly, prioritizing the well-being of yourself and others.

Player Expectations

Respect teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and volunteers at all times.

Behaviour

All players shall be courteous, mature, cooperative and respectful at all times. Individuals should conduct themselves with the knowledge that they, alone, are responsible for their own actions. Cooperate with your coach, teammates and opponents.

Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship and fair play to teammates, coaches, opponents, and officials, are the forefront of the team’s philosophy and attitude. Shaking hands with opponents after competition is a routine procedure. Good sportsmanship should be demonstrated before, during and after games.

Sponsorship

Back the team... Build the game!

Supporting the Courtenay Whalers means more than just putting your logo on a jersey—it’s an investment in the growth of women’s hockey and the continuation of the game beyond minor leagues. Women’s sports are often underrepresented, and your sponsorship helps bridge that gap by making the game more accessible, inclusive, and sustainable.

Your support helps cover essential costs like ice rentals, insurance, and referees, which in turn helps reduce registration fees for players. This allows more women to stay in the game and continue developing their skills in a fun, competitive, and supportive environment.

As a sponsor, you’ll receive:

  • Logo placement on our website
  • Product endorsements through our social media and team events
  • Your logo on our jerseys via a sponsor bar on the back
  • Visibility at games, tournaments, and community events

Join us in growing the game and empowering women in sport—one shift at a time.
