This past Saturday saw a rematch between the Courtenay Whalers and Campbell River Wildcats at Sports Centre #2.  The last game between the two teams saw a Whalers’ domination over the Wildcats in Campbell River; and the Whaler’s team knew to expect a different opponent here at home.

Campbell River was able to open the scoring up first and fast, scoring less than one minute into play when a puck was redirected off a Whaler’s skate.  Whalers bounced back, scoring 3 minutes later on a breakaway by Daris Tendler.  Whaler’s continued on this streak, putting 4 more pucks into the Wildcats net before the end of the 1st period.

Renewed in the 2nd period, Wildcats fought hard along the boards, passed more and created many opportunities to score, but just couldn’t capitalize on plays.  Whalers scored again on a break away to open the scoring in the second period.  Unfortunately, Campbell River came back a couple minutes later and found the back of the net on a break away and again on a 2 on 0.  At the end of the second period score was 7-3 for the Whalers.

A Wildcat forward sneaked past the Courtenay defence, thankfully centre Josée Bureau stopped her, but the play resulted in a penalty shot awarded to the Wildcats.  The strong Campbell River forward taking the penalty shot failed in her attempt to score.  Whalers scored next and going into the last 3 minutes of play Campbell River made a successful attempt to close the gap between goals for and against and put another one on the scoreboard for themselves.  Whalers’ answered back to further complete domination on the Wildcats by scoring in the last minute of play on another breakaway.  Final score of the game was 9-4 for the Courtenay Whaler’s Women’s Hockey team.

Courtenay Whalers will head into Nanaimo this coming Friday night to meet the Nanaimo Int. Team.  Then we will see the Nanaimo House team back here in Courtenay on Sunday, October 30 at 11:45, Sports Center 2.
