The conquest to win their first game in the tournament continued on Saturday for the Whalers as they face a very talented Victoria Extreme. The first period was played with both teams evenly matched. Victoria scored their first goal 2 minutes left into the period. The second period saw a bit more action with the Extreme netting three goals while Whalers’ Kelly Roloff (Brian McLean Chev) was able to put one past the goalie on a rebound from a shot from Josée Bureau. The score after the second period was 4-1 but the Whalers were determined to give the Victoria team a run for their money. Kayla Novelli turned it on during the third period and scored two goals but it wasn’t enough to make up the difference. The opposition were able to score another two goals to end the game at 6-3.
The second game of the day saw the Whalers take on the Nanaimo travelling team. It was a hard fought game with a few rumbles and some excellent plays on defence and on offence. Score ended 3-2 in favor of the Nananimo team. Jaime Banham (InsuranCentre Comox) was voted Most Valuable Player of the Game as she performed many outstanding pirouettes to keep the score close.
The Whalers entered this year tournament in the veteran division after winning the intermediate division last year and were faced with very experienced and talented teams. Coach Kasubuchi was very impressed with the progression of the team throughout the tourney “the team showed a lot of heart and were able to keep up with the play by the last game. A few more games like this and we could really give teams of that level a good challenge” . Definitely a good way to find out what the team needs to work on for the next season.
The Whalers are now off until next season. They would like to extend a warm thank you to all their sponsors and fans. The 2009-2010 season was a great success and the team looks forward to their third season scheduled to start in september 2010.
Until next time!
