The Courtenay Whalers women’s hockey team returned to the ice on Jan. 3 to host the Parksville Seagals. The Whalers started slowly and found themselves down by three after the first period. In the second period Lynn Slaby started the scoring by putting in two goals. Her scoring was a result of hard work from her line mates Jody Fink (Vancouver Island Insurance Centers) and Josee Bureau. Tera Kasubuchi (Comox Valley Auto Electric) also assisted on one of the goals. In the third period, Melissa Dekker scored for the Whalers off a great pass from Kelly Godard (Aero Art Screen Printing). Once again, great goaltending from Jaimie Acorn and defending from Roberta Churchill and Lacey Mortensen kept the Whalers in the game until the final whistle.
On Jan. 8 the Whalers travelled up Island to battle the Campbell River Lynx. This was the first match between the two teams and it quickly became an end-to-end scoring competition. The Whalers hit the score sheet first as Kasubuchi converted a scoring opportunity created by Chanace VanderHeide and Jan Dafoe. Lee McGeorge (Whales Tale Toys) found the back of the net twice. After two periods of play, the Lynx had evened the score at 3-3. In the final period, great goaltending by Acorn and offensive attack by the Whalers resulted in a 7-3 victory over the Lynx. Also scoring for the Whalers were Bureau, Alison Ritchie and Fink. Sky Zimmerman (Brian McLean Chevrolet) set up three goals and defender Genevieve Burdett and forward Marianna Stephens had good games.
