The Courtenay Whalers opened their second season of women’s hockey with wins against two Nanaimo teams.
On Sept. 27, the Whalers defeated the first Nanaimo team 8-5. This fast-paced game featured a hat trick by Tera Kasubuchi, (Comox Valley Auto Electric) two goals by Kayla Novelli (Aero Art Screen Printing and Embroidery) and singles from Deb Lecroix, Lee McGeorge (Whales Tale Toys) and Lacey Mortensen. A number of penalties were assessed, suggesting the intensity involved.
The game against Nanaimo’s Intermediate team was a much more amicable affair, with the Whalers coming out on top 5-1. Novelli and Kelly Godard each scored a pair of goals and McGeorge contributed a single. Sky Zimmerman (Brian McLean Chevrolet Ltd.) and Sky Niskasari supplied the assists. “Thanks to the Whistle Stop Neighbourhood Pub and Fitness Excellence for their sponsorship this year,” a team spokesperson said.
